A finish isn’t simply a colour. It is the result of material, method and treatment working together to define character, durability and performance.

Common questions

Will the finish on screen match what I receive?

Not exactly. Screens and photos shift colour, and finishes look different in different light. Order a sample, or see it in the showroom, before you decide.

Why does the same finish name look different from brand to brand?

Each maker has its own recipe, surface and starting point. Ask three makers for unlacquered brass and you will get three different golds. Compare samples side by side, in your own light.

Can I order a sample?

Yes, and for hand-finished and living finishes we recommend it. Patinas vary from batch to batch, and a sample shows you the real colour in your own home.

Which finishes change over time?

Each brand’s finishes are grouped by type. Unlacquered and living finishes change with air and touch; lacquered, plated and coated finishes stay close to how they arrived. Finishes 101 explains the difference.

Can I mix different hardware finishes?

Yes. Let one finish lead in each room and use a second as an accent. Brass is warm and golden while nickel is cool and silvery, so mixing brass and nickel gives a clear contrast. Brass and black hardware works the same way. Keep lacquered and unlacquered brass in separate rooms: they match when new, then drift apart. Compare samples side by side, in your own light.

Can I download a brand’s finish guide?

Yes. Choose a brand above and use the download link, or download the complete guide covering every brand.

Can I see the finishes in person?

Yes. Every brand’s finishes are on display at our Vancouver showroom. Book an appointment and our team will walk you through them.
